RECIPE FOR SUCCESS
In order to succeed, a recipe needs good raw materials in their correct amount properly manipulated and presented.
Embat restaurant, placed in the middle of the Eixample district of Barcelona, had been cooking fabulous avant-garde cuisine dishes for years when the owners decided to improve their presentation and to do so they entrust the Jordi Ginabreda interior design studio.
As good chefs, interior designers must work with a number of ingredients in the appropriate proportion in their search for an optimum result. Unlike them, they must start from two basic premises, economy and functionality. In the current project, the challenge was being able to achieve the perfect pairing between high cuisine and low budget.
The need for execution costs containment suggested a minimum intervention in roofs and pavements so the typical Catalan vaulted ceilings and the original ceramic floor tile paving were kept seen. The bulk of the work was focused then in vertical surfaces, colour palette, furniture and lighting.
The client functional requirements included improving the acoustic comfort, increasing the luminosity of the space and strengthening its visibility from the street as long as it is a semi-basement floor with very little frontage placed one meter below the street level.
A sound-absorbent material second skin covers the most of the walls and becomes the ingredient that allows the designers to work against the high sound reverberation. This skin is protected by the three-layer spruce wood bench-lattice piece that runs the restaurant longitudinally. The bench-lattice piece also includes the supporting structure for the lamps that light the tables which are finished with a board of the same wooden material. These support structures also provide some sense of pattern to the space and let the vaulted ceiling free of any electrical installation.
The tone of both the wood and the paint chosen as well as the richness of the overall lighting team up to increase the brightness of the hole place solving the second main functional requirement. Chromatic monotony is broken through the touch of colour added by the lacquered wood chairs and the use of mirrors and their multiplier effect become the ultimate accomplice of the strategy.
Lastly, in order to catch passerby attention, we find the main character of the project, its major ingredient: the huge lamp designed specifically for the restaurant and intended to work as a big advertisement. It attracts the walkers and accompanies them as they get into the establishment. With its twenty five light spots it resembles an unavoidable constellation, guiding the steps of the diners like stars guide sailors to safe coast in the past.
Good interior design projects, like dishes, come from the balance between all of its ingredients and even though there are no recipes for success there certainly are some successful ones.
